Registration is open for Purdue Extension's 2017 Indiana Small Farm Conference and trade show, scheduled for March 2-4 at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds and Conference Complex, 1900 E. Main St., Danville.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's North Central Sustainable Agriculture, Research and Education program is offering a number of grants for farmers, educators and researchers working on projects in sustainable agriculture. Individuals and groups are eligible to apply for the grants, which promote "ecologically sound, profitable and socially responsible farming and ranching," said Roy Ballard, Purdue Extension educator in Hancock County and Indiana SARE coordinator.
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence issued a proclamation Monday (Oct. 3) declaring Oct. 3-7 4-H Week in Indiana. The Indiana 4-H Youth Development Program, a component of Purdue Extension, is one of the state's largest youth organizations, with more than 130,000 active members representing all 92 counties.
Minecraft
An article published on June 8th, 2016 by the University of Cambridge noted that a new record-holder for the tallest tree in the tropics is the same species as a tree used in the extremely popular game Minecraft. The use of actual tree species that require maintenance in a video game that has player numbers in the millions to help inform the young and old alike about the value of trees and some of the different species is genius.
Britain's departure from the European Union would have little direct effect on U.S. agricultural trade but could slow Indiana's economic growth tied to manufacturing, Purdue University agricultural economists say.
