Clay County 4-H Crops Project

The 4-H Crops project allows youth the opportunity to explore hands-on crop production. With the opportunity to grow a variety of crops including corn, soybeans, oats, and wheat, youth learn about the different components of agriculture production. While learning and applying practices to control insects and disease, harvesting, storage, and marketing youth are gain valuable life skills such as wise use of resources, keeping records, conflict resolution, and personal safety.

Crops: Corn, Hay & Forages, and Soybeans.


What's in it for me?

You will learn about the amazing corn plant. The project is divided into three divisions:

  • Beginner: first and second years (ages 10-11)
  • Intermediate: third, forth and fifth years (ages 12-14)
  • Advanced: sixth year and beyond (ages 15 and above)

What can I learn?

You can learn about how the corn plants works, the pests that attack corn, uses of corn and the safety practices when growing, harvesting, and storing corn. In the advanced levels you will learn about hybrid corn, the types and sources of nutrients for corn, soil erosion, producing and comparing hybrids, and planting and growing corn crops.

Hay (Forages)

What's in it for me?

Youth develop forage crop subject skills and life skills through fun hands-on experiences.

What can I learn?

You can learn forage crop identification, plant growth, and plant care.


What is in it for me?

The Soybean project introduces you to one of Indiana's major crops, the soybean through fun experiences and hands-on projects.

What can I learn?

You will lean about selecting soybean varieties, planting soybeans, uses for soybeans and harvesting soybeans.
