At-Home Computer Science Activities for Kids

Visit 4-hworldchangers.hackathon.com to sign up for the Indiana 4-H World Changers Hackathon. Middle school and high school youth can choose a problem to solve, work as an individual or with a group online to solve it, and turn in their solution by April 22.

More activities:

  • Animate a Name activity from National 4-H Council and Purdue Extension Tippecanoe County 4-H
  • Beginner coding activities: Can be led by parents at home, or virtually by 4-H club leaders.
  • Beginner www.hourofcode.com is a gateway to a multitude of resources, most of them are free.  Many of them use Blockly or Scratch, which are block based programming tools that are designed for young people to "think like a computer scientist".
  • www.scratch.mit.edu is a block based program created by MIT and was the first to create a path for young people to learn computer science.  There are a lot of videos and tutorials out there that make it easy for young people to learn without a lot of adult support.
  • https://csfirst.withgoogle.com/s/en/home is well thought out curriculum that uses Scratch to teach computer science concepts to youth.  4-H has partnered with Google and some of this curriculum has been directly created by national 4-H.
  • www.code.org is the organization that hosts the Hour of Code, but has also developed an incredible curriculum for beginners all the way up to JavaScript, Python, Java, SQL, and more.  It is very well done and has a lot of support.
  • www.trinket.io is an online interface with some curriculum in Python2, Python3, Python Turtle, R, HTML and Java.  It is free and well done, but more for a self-starter who needs a flexible interface to develop their ideas.  Essentially it's for older youth who have developed ideas.
  • www.pythoninstitute.org is a very well written course that goes in depth on how to create in Python3.  Currently the best Python curriculum I've found to date.  It is written so high school age youth and dedicated middle school youth will enjoy it.
