WHAT WE DO 

HHS Extension Educators bring university information to the local level and help people strengthen families, spend smart, eat right, and live well. We offer a variety of educational programming, from short single-session programming to multiple-day certification programming. Many of our programs are free to the community, while some programs require a registration fee. Follow the links below to learn more about our programming.
  • Strengthen Families – Strong individuals and families build a foundation for healthy communities. HHS Extension programs address issues including child care, school readiness, family conflict, and peer pressure.
  • Spend Smart – Everyone benefits from learning how to make smarter choices that maximize their finances and household resources. HHS Extension delivers best practices for all your money management needs.
  • Eat Right – What we eat impacts our health and well-being. To help prevent and manage chronic diseases, HHS Extension offers guidance on healthy food choices and meal preparation.
  • Get Active – Many risk factors for disability or death are preventable, and HHS Extension is dedicated to helping individuals and families improve their quality of life.

Get WalkIN

Are you looking to make lifestyle changes? Need some motivation or support with physical activity? Get WalkIN' is a FREE walking initiative being offered through Purdue Extension in Hendricks County. We will walk every Monday from 5-6pm at Ellis Park in Danville, IN. Participants who attend a minimum of 9 weeks will receive a fitness tracker! Registration is due by August 12th. Our last Get Walkin’ program gathered together 43 Hendricks County residents virtual and in-person to join us in improving physical health. Way to go!

Topic: Cooking with Herbs and Herb Health Benefits

Description: Participants in this lesson will gain the knowledge in using herbs and spices to enhance flavors in your everyday meals without consuming the added sugars and salts contained in many seasoning packets. We will also be learning about the health benefits of each herb and spice used in the demonstration, along with proper storing and preparation techniques. Come join this culinary experience to enhance your flavor pallet and increase your overall health!

A Matter of Balance – A Matter of Balance is a fall prevention program that encourages cognitive restructuring.  It is designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults.  A Matter of Balance is an evidence-based program that enables participants to reduce the fear of falling by learning to view falls as controllable, setting goals for increasing activity levels, making small changes to reduce fall risks at home, and exercise to increase strength and balance.

 Additional topics include home safety, assertiveness, developing positive strategies for change, reducing barriers to exercise, identifying physical risk factors for falls, personal action planners, recognizing misconceptions about falls, and moving from self-defeating to self-motivating thoughts.

Target audience: Target audience is for all adults who have started to restrict their activity levels due to a concern about falling, are able to problem solve, may have fallen in the past, and live independently in the community.

Health outcomes: Improved falls efficacy, Improved falls management, and Increased activity/exercise level
