Subject: COMMERCIAL HORT ALERT: Emergency class for Evansville Tree Trimmer's License

Importance: High

02/03/2009

From Larry Caplan, Extension Horticulture Educator

Due to the influx of people descending on the Evansville area to help clear trees damaged by last week’s ice storm, City Arborist Shawn Dickerson and I have agreed to hold a special Tree Ordinance Compliance Seminar on Friday, February 6, starting at 6:00 pm. We will be meeting in the Evansville/Vanderburgh Civic Center, Room 301.

Remember...it is against Evansville’s Tree Ordinance to be pruning or removing trees within the city limits of Evansville without a tree trimmer’s license. No license is required for crews or volunteers dealing with storm debris already on the ground. Tree workers caught working without a license can be fined from $300 to $1000 per incident. Rather than spending resources chasing unlicensed people out of the community, we are offering them a chance to get licensed legally.

The class if FREE OF CHARGE. All tree workers planning on attending must bring their proof of insurance (liability and workman’s compensation) with them. Contact the Urban Forestry office for more information.

The class will concentrate on safety issues, proper pruning techniques, and the ins and outs of the ordinance. A brief look at pests such as the Emerald Ash Borer and quarantine issues will be covered as well.

The class is free, but it would be a good idea to call either the Urban Forestry office (812-475-1426) or the Purdue Extension office (812-435-5287) to let us know how many are coming.

NOTE: To non-commercial recipients of this alert (media, Master Gardeners, neighborhood associations, concerned citizens): If you see out-of-town tree workers roaming your neighborhoods, or doing work for you, let them know about this opportunity. Try to spread the word as best you can. It is very important that anyone working on our trees knows what they’re doing, and carry the proper insurance to protect themselves and their customers. Thanks!
